The Office of Naval Research sponsors the annual Summer Faculty Research Program to provide faculty members from US institutions to participate in research with their professional colleagues at U.S. Navy laboratories. Dr. George Youssef, assistant professor of Mechanical Engineering at SDSU, was selected to spend 10 weeks during the summer of 2016 to work at the Center for Innovation in Ship Design at Carderock Naval Systems Warfare Center in Bethesda Maryland. During his stay at Carderock, Dr. Youssef collaborated with senior engineers from U.S. and U.K. to perform a feasibility study on the adoption of composite materials in the power delivery system on board of Navy ships. The outcomes and specifics of the project are now under review for public release, which is expected to be available by the end of 2016. While the project was intellectually interesting, the fellowship resulted in two important outcomes. First, it provided a unique opportunity to learn the work culture and the research interested of the Office of Naval Research to better support the mission of the U.S. Navy and Marine core. Second, the fellowship was an excellent networking event. Dr. Youssef was able to meet with multiple teams on base and with ONR program managers to discuss research projects of mutual interest. Overall, the fellowship was an excellent exchange opportunity.
